In response to Nick Clegg's comments on the Andrew Marr show, in which he referred to a question on unemployment figures as "trading statistics," Douglas Alexander, Labour's Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, said:

"We knew that the Tories think that unemployment is a price worth but now we know that Nick Clegg thinks his own Government's plan to cut 490,000 jobs in the public sector is just a statistic.

"Either he doesn't understand or he doesn't care about the cost of umemployment that is paid by individuals families and communities."
