Jim Murphy MP, Labour's Shadow Defence Secretary, commenting on the news that BAE plan to cut 1,400 UK jobs, said:
“As the Government prepares to launch its Industrial Strategy, the scale of these potential job losses shows that their defence plans will decimate the UK industrial base.
“The cancellation of Nimrod and Harrier leaves significant gaps in our military capability, but the impact will also be felt by communities and families throughout the UK.
“A vibrant UK defence industry should be part of a strong UK defence policy and an economic growth strategy, but the Government has a plan for neither.
“The Government must stop and think again.”
