Gareth Thomas MP, Labour's Shadow Higher Education Minister, in response to the government announcement today that almost £800 million would be cut from university funding said:

"At the very moment when we need universities and science to help drive the creation of new jobs in new industries, the Government are imposing a triple whammy on universities – cuts in teaching funding, in research funding and in capital investment.

We see economic growth forecasts have been revised down today and this Conservative-led Government's deep cuts to universities does nothing to encourage growth or jobs in the future."
