Tessa Jowell MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office and Olympics responding to reports that Lord Wei is cutting back his hours at Cabinet Office said:

“It comes as no real surprise that the architect of the Big Society has been forced to cut back on his volunteering. The manner of his  appointment is symptomatic of the Tory-led Government’s overall approach to civil society – asking families and communities to give more of their time while the state gives them less in return.

“Across the country, community organisations are facing real difficulties, forced into laying off staff and reducing the services that they have to offer as a result of the Tory-led  Government’s ideological choice of accelerated cuts. Lord Wei will not be the only unpaid volunteer struggling to make ends meet and keep civil society going in the coming weeks and months.”
