Maria Eagle MP, Labour's Shadow Transport Secretary, in response to the Campaign for Better Transport's findings today that 70% of councils in England were planning major cuts to their bus budgets, said:
“When the Tory-led Government announced their plans to slash bus subsidy, they claimed it wouldn’t impact on services. But these figures show that, up and down the country, councils are being forced to cut support for bus services because of the choices this Tory-led Government has made.
"This will be particularly damaging in rural areas where bus services often provide the only means of transport for many people. How are people supposed to follow Iain Duncan Smith’s advice to “get on the bus and look for work” when their bus services have been withdrawn?”
