Labour's Kate Green MP, commenting on Save the Children's report detailing that 1.6m children across the UK live in severe poverty, said:
“Today’s report from Save the Children makes for worrying reading.
“George Osborne promised at his Budget and Spending Review that his tough approach to cutting the deficit would not increase child poverty.
“But Save the Children is right to warn about the impact of rising unemployment, the VAT increase and unfair cuts to welfare.
“Labour made great progress in this important area – lifting 600,000 children out of poverty by the time we left office. It would be a tragedy if this progress was now reversed by the Conservative-led Government’s decision to go too far and too fast with deficit reduction.”
