Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, commenting on David Cameron's statement today, said:

“The United Nations is the best forum to enforce sanctions and pursue investigations against those who are committing crimes against their people, but Britain must play a leading role in ensuring the UN takes effective action.

“In the next 24 hours, Government needs to focus on doing everything it can to help British nationals get out of Libya, especially those who are in isolated locations.

“After the false starts earlier in the week, people will want continued assurance that the Government has now got a grip of the situation."
