Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, commenting on Liam Fox’s response to Labour Urgent Question, said:
“In November Liam Fox pledged that no-one serving in Afghanistan would be sacked. Today he has been forced to admit that what he really meant is that they will have to wait until they return from duty to be sacked.
“Liam Fox is playing with words and playing with the livelihoods of the bravest of Britain’s Forces. They deserve better. To call compulsory redundancies of Forces in Afghanistan and sackings of soldiers by email “peripheral issues” beggars belief and shows a disregard for our Forces.
“The country wants urgently to know what the impact of the Tory-led Government’s cuts will be on our defence capabilities in this changing world. The Conservative-led Government need to look again at aspects of the Defence Review.
"While we support Liam Fox's words, we will judge him by his actions. His rushed defence review was not properly costed and is being reopened to find an additional £1bn cuts to the equipment programme."
