Liam Byrne MP, Labour's Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on the Welfare Reform Bill said:
“David Cameron has got to get a grip of welfare reform fast.
“The welfare reform bill is a ramshackle reform. It offers some good ideas but with a frightening leap in the dark for millions of parents, savers and self-employed who may lose thousands of pounds a year for child-care and wage top-ups, and a game of Russian roulette for some of the most vulnerable in our society.
“If they're lucky they'll get well enough to work before their benefits are cut. If they're unlucky they won't.
“Worse, this comes at a time when the economy has stopped creating jobs fast enough to absorb public sector cut-backs and the Work Programme has been cut down so badly that bidders are getting cold feet.
“This is David Cameron's flagship policy and it’s starting to sink. It’s time to get a grip.”
