Kerry McCarthy MP, Labour's Shadow Treasury Minister, said in response to the AA announcing that the average price of petrol has reached £6 a gallon:
"George Osborne needs to stop dithering and act now. He should help hard-pressed motorists this week by listening to Labour and immediately reversing the Tory VAT rise on fuel.
"Putting up VAT to 20 per cent was a mistake at this fragile time for our economy and has added £1.35 to the cost of filling up a 50 litre tank.
"And in the Budget he should look again at the annual duty rise due in April. The last Labour Government often postponed planned duty rises when world oil prices were going up, as they are now."
