Diane Abbott MP, Labour’s Shadow Public Health Minister, commenting on the Government’s announcement on tobacco, said:

"The last Labour government had a very strong record on tobacco control. We introduced the smoking ban in pubs and enclosed spaces, ended sports sponsorship and billboard advertising, raised the legal age of purchasing cigarettes and put graphic warnings on cigarette packs.

"I welcome the fact that after expressing doubts in opposition, the Tories have finally seen the error of their ways and are now implementing Labour's proposals. But given the dither and confusion we have seen to date there remains widespread concern that the advances we made in smoking policy may now be coming to a halt.

“When it comes to improving the nation’s health, all we have seen from David Cameron so far is broken promise after broken promise.”
