Jim Murphy MP, Labour's Shadow Defence Secretary, said on the developing situation in Libya:

“This is a moment of truth for the international community to end the slaughter of innocents in Libya. The Government are right to take strong and urgent action against Colonel Gaddafi's military capabilities.  Gaddafi has no-one to blame but himself.  Britain should stand in solidarity with the Libyan people.

“Our Armed Forces will rightly now be part of the international community’s efforts to end the bloodshed and bring liberty and peace to Libya.

“There will be relief in the streets of Benghazi but there will also be some anxiety in the homes of Service families in Britain.

“The nation’s thoughts should be with the brave men and women of our Forces who will be carrying out these courageous acts. They are Britain at its best and bravest and we should give them all the support they need in this operation.”
