John Denham MP, Labour's Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the BBC's research suggesting more English university students than originally expected will be paying the maximum tuition fee of £9,000 a year, said:

“The Tory-led Government has completely lost control of their fees policy. Future generations of students have been betrayed again and face even higher fees than the Government promised Parliament three months ago. It would be quite wrong if either students or universities were punished for the government’s own incompetence.

"With more universities charging £9000 the government is set to have a big funding gap they will need to fill. This is unnecessary, unfair and unsustainable. The policy completely undermines the government's claim to improve social mobility."
