Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to Liam Fox’s remarks, said:
“Liam Fox has his head in the sand. No-one believes the Government predicted the uprisings in North Africa and our necessary response is in part reliant on military capabilities they had planned to scrap. The defence review did not even mention Tunisia, Egypt or Libya. It would be a sign of a confident government to pause, think again and reopen the review. The cuts in the defence review were ministerial choices, they should not pretend otherwise.
“These cuts in capability are permanent while the deficit is temporary. The impact will be felt long after the deficit has been dealt with.”
