John Denham MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting following the University of Sheffield’s announcement that it would charge maximum fees, said:
"When a university in Nick Clegg's own city charges the maximum £9,000 in tuition fees, it's clearer than ever that his promise to student voters in Sheffield and around the country wasn't worth the paper it was written on.
“In explaining its decision, Sheffield University has echoed the comments of the majority of universities who have set their fees so far – they have to charge £9000 to replace the huge cuts in government funding. Not only has Nick Clegg broken his promise on fees, he also tries to defend this Tory-led Government’s chaotic and ill-thought through policy on higher education. It’s time Nick Clegg and his Tory colleagues admit they got it wrong.”
