Jim Murphy MP, Labour's Shadow Defence Secretary responding to the head of the The Royal Navy, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope's evidence to the Commons Defence Committee yesterday said:
“This news blows a hole in the Government’s arguments over their rushed defence review. Ministers have consistently said that decisions made in the review do not hinder our Services but now we have Service heads saying that an aircraft carrier would be used in Libya and that our Forces are stretched.
“The Public know that our operations overseas are important for our security back home, but they will want Ministers to urgently respond to these comments to assure us that, in an uncertain world, Britain has the capabilities we need.
“This is a damning indictment of the Government’s defence policy and frankly our Forces deserve a lot better.”
