Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, said in response to the Sentencing Council's consultation on burglary:

“It is right that the emotional distress felt by victims of burglary is taken into account by judges and magistrates. The needs of victims should be at the heart of the criminal justice system and considered in sentencing guidelines.

“The sentence for burglary must reflect the trauma felt by victims when an intruder enters their home, so I welcome the Sentencing Council’s proposal to increase the tariff for domestic burglary.

“I strongly urge people to get involved with the consultation the Sentencing Council are undertaking, so sentencing guidelines for burglary represent the views of the public.”
