Shabana Mahmood MP, Labour's Shadow Home office minister, commenting today on the report by the UK Border Agency's independent chief inspector on the way the agency uses intelligence to tackle illegal immigration, said:
"The UKBA's intelligence and enforcement work is so important for an effective immigration regime. Yet the Tory-led Government is cutting 20% of the UKBA's budget and over 5,000 staff. This is putting more pressure on the UKBA and we have repeatedly warned the Government that enforcement could suffer as a result.
"Cutting so deeply and quickly the agency responsible for effective policing of our immigration rules and stronger borders is counter productive. It will cost us more if we fail to tackle illegal immigration and their work is key.
"What is needed are clear and effective rules, fairly and robustly enforced. Yet despite all the government's tough talk on immigration they are failing to deliver."
