Alison Seabeck MP, Labour's Shadow Housing Minister, commenting on Government plans to remove tenants earning over £100,000 from council houses, said:

"Britain's housing crisis will not be solved by asking the 0.1% of social housing tenants earning salaries of £100,000 to move house or by trying to turn council estates into places where hard working families are not welcome.

"The Tories are already attacking aspiration by threatening to take away the homes of social housing tenants on modest incomes if they get a pay rise or promotion.

"The enormous bureaucratic cost of assessing and monitoring the incomes of millions of  tenants would be better spent tackling illegal council house sub-letting, and fraud, thereby freeing up more homes for those who deserve them, and improving housing supply."
