Sadiq Khan MP, Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to Nick Herbert's comments today on reducing jail terms for those who plead guilty, said:

"Despite calls from victims' groups and top judges, this Tory-led government are still proposing a policy that flies in the face of justice.

"There is no evidence that cutting sentences by 50% will lead to more early guilty pleas. Instead it will lead to people serving shorter prison sentences than they deserve.

"This government are still pushing this policy because their overriding objective is to cut costs not do justice. They have yet again shown they know the price of everything but the value of nothing.

"They are cutting police numbers, prison places, probation services and breaking promise after promise. It is clear the Tories can no longer be trusted on law and order."
