Tessa Jowell MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Cabinet Office and the Olympics, responding to news that the number of registered charities has fallen, said: 

“I am extremely concerned that the number of charities is already declining, even before they face spending cuts and tax rises of more than £1 billion this year. 

“Alongside the Government’s tax rises and spending cuts, charitable donations are falling. It is impossible to argue that the Big Society is being nurtured when the organisations that are being asked to deliver it are laying off staff, reducing their services or even closing their doors.”
