Ian Lucas MP, Labour's Shadow Business Minister, said in response to BMW's announcement that it will invest £500 million in UK car production over the next three years, safeguarding over 5,000 jobs:

"This welcome investment is a tribute to the stable, team approach of the UK automotive industry - working together to attract investment. The last Labour Government supported both Nissan and BMW Mini with its car scrappage scheme when times very tough and this long-term commitment is now bearing fruit.

"Following the announcement of the construction of a new battery plant and the manufacture of the Nissan Leaf at the Sunderland plant under the last Labour Government, this is further evidence that Britain's automotive industry remains competitive internationally as a result of the right building blocks being put in place."
