Maria Eagle MP, Labour's Shadow Transport Secretary, has again called on the Tory-led Government to abandon their plans to close coastguard stations following today’s publication of the Transport Select Committee report. The proposals would mean more than half of the UK’s coastguard stations would close, with just three of those remaining offering round the clock cover.
In a damning condemnation of the proposals, the Transport Select Committee says:
“The evidence we have received raises serious concerns that safety will be jeopardised if these proposals proceed.”
The Committee calls on the Tory-led Government to:
“... withdraw its modernisation proposals for the Coastguard and consult on revised plans that satisfactorily address the key issues we have identified.”
