Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to the Government’s proposal in the Public Bodies Bill to scrap the Office of the Chief Coroner, said:
“Soon after enshrining the military covenant in law, Ministers are wasting no time in weakening it. The country will judge ministers by their actions not their words.
“The Royal British Legion are clear that this is a betrayal of bereaved Armed Forces families. This will deny families of all those that die under suspicious and complex circumstances an independent and high quality system of inquest.
“Tomorrow Ministers must think again and do the right thing by Service families. They must explore arguments from the charities that the Office of the Chief Coroner could be established at a substantially lower cost than the current estimate from Government.”
