Ivan Lewis MP, Labour's Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, said:
"I welcome Baroness Buscombe’s decision to resign as Chair of the PCC. The organisation needs new leadership to take it through a difficult period until Lord Justice Leveson’s inquiry makes recommendations about the future of press regulation.
"I am concerned that the Press Standards Board of Finance, the organisation with responsibility for appointing the PCC Chair, is dominated by senior representatives from the newspaper industry.
"At this crucial time they have a duty to ensure their selection committee and process are independent and transparent. A new chair, whether appointed on a permanent or temporary basis, must have the necessary independence and leadership skills to attract widespread support.
"Getting this decision right has never been more important."
