Jack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Communities Minister, responding to reports that Eric Pickles MP, the Communities and Local Government Secretary, will tomorrow launch a campaign to lure shoppers back to Britain's High Streets, said:
"Eric Pickles is no friend of the High Street.
“It was Labour that won all-party support – in the face of reluctance from Mr Pickles – for our campaign to instruct local authority planners to give priority to putting the heart back into Britain's High Streets. For him to try and belatedly claim credit is an almighty cheek.
“The truth is that this Tory-led Government has no plan for growth. They have harmed the High Street with a hike in VAT which has squeezed family incomes and led to fewer people shopping in our stores.
