Douglas Alexander MP, Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary, commenting on the statement at the UN Security Council regarding the violence in Syria, said:

“Although it has been too long in coming, this action by the Security Council should demonstrate to President Assad that the whole international community wants an immediate end to the violence in Syria. He must meet the calls from the Security Council and the people of Syria not with repression but with the fundamental change demanded

“Britain must stand ready to take further diplomatic steps both in New York and Brussels if President Assad does not heed the present calls and stop the appalling use of violence.”
