In response to reports this morning that foreign prisoners convicted of serious offences are being released and not deported as they should be:

Shabana Mahmood MP, Shadow Home Office Minister, said:

"On foreign prisoners not being deported the Home Secretary needs to come clean immediately with the numbers, circumstances and actions she is taking to remedy the situation.

"The usual silent response of Theresa May to these serious issues is not good enough. The Labour Party and even her own backbenchers are united in calling for her to explain how it is that foreign prisoners convicted of serious offences are being released from prison when there is a system in place for them to be held until they can be deported. Is she taking steps to make sure this does not happen in the future and what action has she taken to detain those that have been released in error and deport them?

"The public deserve better than the deafening silence from the Home Secretary on this issue. If she is unwilling to admit there is a problem how can anyone have confidence in her ability to put it right."
