Vernon Coaker MP, Labour's Shadow Policing Minister, in response to a study published today in the Daily Telegraph linking police patrols with drops in crime, said:
"More and more evidence is being published that makes clear what most people already know. More police on patrol cuts crime. That is why we think the Government is taking an unacceptable risk with crime and law and order.
"It's time this Government listened if not to us then to the police, academics, the HMIC, ACPO and the public. We are all telling them to rethink their plans for 20% frontloaded cuts to the police that will lead to 16,000 fewer police officers.
"This Government needs to support the police and the fight against crime and not continue to put the safety of our streets and communities at risk."
