John Woodcock MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Minister, responding to the Transport Secretary’s proposals to charge utility companies to dig up roads, said:
“These proposals will do little to ease the menace of road works for the majority of motorists because lane rental will be restricted to the very busiest routes.
“Ministers must explain why they are still dithering on whether to enact the last Labour Government’s plans for a tenfold increase in fines on utility companies whose road works overrun. This was a missed opportunity to get tough on ill-coordinated schemes that drive road users mad.”
