Chris Leslie MP, Labour's Shadow Treasury Minister, responding to Nick Clegg’s comments on spending cuts in Yorkshire in which he said “there is a fair point about timing here”, said:

"Even the Deputy Prime Minister now seems to admit that his Government’s decision to cut too far and too fast risks increasing unemployment.

"Nick Clegg and the Tory-led Government need to realise that instead of a reckless rush to austerity we need a balanced plan that puts jobs and growth first.

"More people in work paying taxes and fewer out of work on benefits is the best way to get the deficit down – keeping people on the dole doesn’t save money, it wastes money."
