Alison Seabeck MP, Labour’s Shadow Housing Minister, responding to the Government's Statutory Homelessness figures, said:
“The Government has failed to listen to the concerns raised by organisations involved in the prevention of homelessness, and to take action to stop homelessness climbing further, with all the human misery which is attached to each and every one of these statistics.
“Homelessness is rising because of the policies which this Government have introduced. Their opposition to Labour's amendments to the Localism Bill, which would have offered greater protection and advice to people presenting as homeless, speaks volumes about their attitude to this issue.
“In addition to their failure to adequately support preventative measures, the Tory-led Government’s decision, supported by the Lib Dems, to cut the budget for new affordable homes by 60% and to cause disarray in the planning system is preventing homes from being built to meet the growing level of need.”
