Emma Reynolds MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Europe, responding to today’s verdict in the trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been sentenced to seven years in jail, said:
“I am deeply concerned by today’s ruling. This verdict will surely have very serious implications for Ukraine’s relations with the UK and its neighbours. There can be no place for politically motivated trials in any country seeking to engage with the European Union, and this verdict will put the future of the EU Association agreement in jeopardy.
“The rule of law should not be applied selectively to further political aims. The Ukrainian authorities need to urgently review this case which did not respect international standards of fair and transparent process, in order to provide assurances that Ukraine is not turning its back on the progress that it has made towards becoming an open, transparent and just society. This is a big step backwards for Ukraine.”
