Hilary Benn MP, Labour's Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary, commenting on the Shelter Report on the Private Rented Sector, said:
“There is a housing crisis in the country, and the Government’s reckless economic policy is making it worse.
“We need to build more homes so that everyone, not least our young people and families getting started in life, can find a decent place to live.
“But Shelter’s report is a damning indictment of the Tory-led Government’s inability to provide enough decent, new housing – and a real warning for the future.
“Under Labour, the private rented sector will be properly regulated, so every family that rents has security and choice. And Labour would repeat the bankers’ bonus tax to build 25,000 new affordable homes. Together that would mean more homes, that are in a better condition with fairer rents for people in the private rented sector.”
Jack Dromey MP, Labour's Shadow Housing Minister, responding to Grant Shapps comments on the Today programme this morning that his Government had built more affordable homes for rent than any time since 1995-6, said:
“Grant Shapps should check his facts. The 60,000 new affordable homes built last year were planned for, financed and started by the last Labour government. The only affordable housing Grant Shapps is responsible for are those his Government has scrapped.”
