Chi Onwurah MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Innovation and Science, said in response to the Ofcom Communications Infrastructure report:
"Digital Infrastructure is a critical to the future of our economy. This report highlights the out of touch government’s failure to deliver on broadband and mobile networks for rural areas.
"Ofcom says that 14% of homes still don’t have decent fixed broadband and 27% of homes don’t have access to mobile broadband, mainly in rural areas. This is a barrier to economic growth. Labour in government was working towards Universal Broadband by the end of 2012 but the Tory-led Government has abandoned that goal and is abandoning the rural economy."
Helen Goodman MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for the Communications Industries said:
"Without Universal Broadband rural communities will be left behind and the digital divide will grow. The communications industries have a major part to play in economic growth and digital inclusion but the government is undermining that."
