Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, said in Feltham and Heston this morning:

"Thank you to the people of Feltham and Heston.

"You have again put your trust in Labour and we are determined to repay that trust. Seema Malhotra will work everyday to show that they made the right choice and will repay the trust you put in her.

"By-elections are not general elections but they do offer a verdict.

"This one offers a verdict on this Government’s failing economic plan. It is your verdict - the verdict of the people of Feltham and Heston; it is a verdict of the young person looking for work; the family seeing their living standards squeezed; the business under pressure.

"It is a verdict which also says there must be a better way forward.

"This is not just a swing from the Tories to Labour. It is a swing away from Tory ideas to Labour ideas. Labour ideas that put young people back to work. Labour ideas that gets growth going in the economy. Labour ideas that even in tough times, there can be hope.

"The Prime Minister made a big boast of coming here. But this morning the Conservatives are writing off not just the result, they are writing off the people of Feltham and Heston. They are saying that the people of Feltham and Heston are just 'traditional Labour'.

"I say, instead of denying the people's choice, they should be listening to the people's verdict .

That is what people hate about this Government - that they just don't listen.

"The people of Feltham and Heston are like people across this country - fearful of what is happening in Britain and determined there must be a better way.

"We also know this. Our job, Labour’s job, is to rebuild trust in politics. We, Labour, are starting to win back trust but we know there is more to do.

"More arguments that we need to win.

"More people we have to convince.

"More people we have to win back.

"More people to convince that they can have faith again that politics can make a difference to their lives.

"We can do that with brilliant new MPs like Seema Malhotra. She will make a fantastic MP. She will fight for the people of Feltham and Heston.

"And let’s now take this campaign forward.

"Fighting to convince people politics can make a difference.

"Fighting against the 1930s mindset of this Government: that nothing can be done.

"Fighting for our alternative.

"Let’s go out and fight for all those people who want hope restored to this country.

"Let’s go out and fight for Britain."
