Sadiq Khan MP, Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary, said on the Government’s decision to bring to an end Sir Peter Gibson’s inquiry:

"While there is an ongoing criminal investigation into allegations related to our security and intelligence services, it’s only right that any independent inquiry must be suspended. We welcome the commitment that an independent inquiry will still take place once criminal investigations have come to an end. The inquiry should get to the bottom of these very serious allegations and find out what actually happened.

"An independent judge led inquiry will help us do this and it is important the Government uses this opportunity to make every effort to engage with NGOs, former detainees, and other concerned parties."
