Gareth Thomas MP, Labour’s Minister for Civil Society and Co-op Party Chair, commenting on David Cameron’s announcement today of a Co-operatives’ Bill, said:

"David Cameron is trying to steal Labour's clothes yet again by talking about co-operatives - who is he trying to kid? In the absence of any other concrete proposal to deal with excessive top pay or irresponsible capitalism, he's seized on co-operatives as something to talk about - but he hasn't proposed any new measures to help co-operatives, and he's refusing to support the Co-operative Party's plan to enshrine co-operative housing in legislation.

"Nobody is seriously going to believe that David Cameron stands for co-operatives or a more responsible capitalism when he's leading a Government which is failing to stand up to powerful vested interests."
