Chris Leslie MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, responding to the Bank of England's Trends in Lending report, said:
“Small businesses across the country need to innovate, invest and grow so they can provide much needed jobs in our economy, but the cosy “Project Merlin” deal the Government secretively agreed with the banks is not getting the finance flowing that we need.
“Despite the relentless spin from the Government, the figures released today by the independent Bank of England show that lending to SMEs contracted between April and November 2011. With unemployment the highest for a generation, the recovery choked-off and our economy flatlining, the government needs to urgently change course to get jobs and growth back into our economy.”
