Hilary Benn MP, Labour’s Shadow Communities Secretary, commenting on a shocking 20% rise in forced repossessions in the last year, said:
“The alarming rise we have seen in forced repossessions in the last year should be a matter of huge concern for the Tory-led Government, and yet all we see is complacency. They should be helping struggling families who face the risk of losing their home, instead of making life more difficult through cuts to Support for Mortgage Interest, reductions in funding to advice services in many parts of the country, and unfair changes to housing benefit.”
“The last Labour Government took action during the recession to prevent repossessions reaching the horrific scale we saw during the recession of the early 1990s. More than 330,000 households benefitted from help to keep them in their homes.
“With families feeling the squeeze, and unemployment at a 17 year high, the threat of repossession will be a real worry for many households. The Government must ensure that there is real help in place.”
