Kevan Jones MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Minister, responding to reports that Sir Philip Mawer, David Cameron’s independent advisor on ministerial interests, was frustrated not to have been asked to investigate Adam Werritty’s links to Liam Fox, said:
“Labour called repeatedly for the independent adviser to investigate and now we know Cameron was the roadblock to transparency.
“This highlights the Prime Minister’s complete lack of credibility on open government. Huge questions remain about the potential wrongdoing that took place on his watch and yet David Cameron refused to uncover the truth.
“David Cameron must explain why he didn’t call on Sir Philip Mawer to investigate. The Government should now make public any communication on this matter between Sir Philip and the Cabinet Secretary.
“On this occasion it seems that the Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests was not independent at all but under the control of the Prime Minister. This should be examined and David Cameron must ensure that he does not allow such a situation to happen again.”
