Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to new IPPR analysis of unemployment in the UK ahead of Wednesday’s Labour Market Statistics, said:
“This analysis shows the true scale of our country’s unemployment emergency, yet still complacent ministers are failing to act.
“With youth unemployment at record highs and nearly two years after they decided to axe Labour’s successful Future Jobs Fund, it is totally unacceptable that the Government’s own smaller youth jobs scheme is still months away.
“Unless ministers act soon a whole generation will be scarred by long term unemployment. The country can’t wait any longer for action to get people into work, the Government must do something now, and they should start by levying a tax on bankers' bonuses to create a 100,000 youth jobs.”
