Sharon Hodgson MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Children and Families, responding to comments from Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director UCL Institute of Health Equity, said:
“Labour has been campaigning against the devastating attack on children’s services by this Tory-led Government - slashing the funding for children's centres and other support for the early years which have such an important part to play in reducing health and educational inequalities. Those deep cuts are disproportionately hitting areas of high deprivation, with per-child cuts in Haringey three times those in Hampshire.
“These reports show that even the Government's own adviser thinks this is a false economy. Investing in children at an early age saves money in the long term. The Government clearly haven’t been listening to parents, so I hope they will listen to the experts. I urge ministers to think again – before it’s too late.”
