Karen Buck MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Minister, responding to the NEET figures published by the Department for Education today, said:
“This Government’s disastrous economic failure is creating a jobless generation.
“Today’s figures show a year-on-year increase in the number of young people not in education, employment or training. One in five young people are out of work. This is disastrous for individuals and damaging for the economic renewal Britain needs. David Cameron is making tough times even harder, with policies that are hurting, not working.
“By failing to take the required action needed to get the economy moving, this Tory-led Government is showing just how out of touch it is with the realities of life for so many young people.
“Labour has set out its five point plan for jobs and growth, calling on the Government to take action now to get young people into work and apprenticeships. In the budget announced next month, the Chancellor has an opportunity to change course so that a generation of potential is not lost.”
