Kate Green MP. Labour's Shadow Equalities Minister, responding to Lynne Featherstone's comments on the equal right of gay and lesbian couples to marry said:

"Labour strongly agrees that gay and lesbian couples should have an equal right to marry and deserve the same recognition from the state and society as anyone else.

"It's regrettable that the Coalition delayed the consultation on making civil marriage available to same sex couples until next month. Since the Labour government introduced civil partnerships for same sex couples, society has moved a long way and it's now time to finish the job. People recognise that all couples who love and make a commitment to each other should have the choice to marry."
