Luciana Berger MP, Labour’s Shadow Climate Change Minister, responding to a report by Transform UK showing that under the Government’s Green Deal scheme fuel poverty could rise to nine million by 2016, said:
“This report is a devastating indictment of the Government’s Green Deal. It confirms that the scheme won’t deliver for hard pressed consumers struggling with huge rises in energy bills and could leave nine million people in fuel poverty.
“It shows how out of touch ministers are when they refuse to improve the policy, even though it’s clear their proposals are fundamentally flawed.
“Without urgent action the Green Deal is in risk of becoming a disaster. It’s wrong that the Government is giving three times as much subsidy to households who can already afford to improve their homes than to the fuel poor.”
