Catherine McKinnell MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Children and Young Families, responding to the Government's announcement on adoption, said:
"Labour agrees that local authorities should look to speed up adoption, and should end any barriers to mixed race adoption, as many have already. However, we don’t need to wait for legislation on this, we could implement these reforms today with guidance and training.
"Fostering to adopt could be a possible way forward, particularly for younger children. However, it will not be a panacea as it is likely to be inappropriate for most older children that come into foster care. The Government should focus on the right long-term outcomes for all children including those with more complex needs."
