Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, responding to criticism by victims’ groups of proposed new stalking laws, said:
"The Government needs to listen to victims of stalking and expert campaigners. There is still a gap between the Prime Minister's rhetoric on Thursday and the reality of the amendments the Government has proposed.
"As drafted, the Government's proposals are not strong enough and could simply continue the problems of the existing system. Stalkers may be out of prison within weeks, while victims will not receive the swift justice they deserve.
"Labour's amendments to strengthen the Government's proposals will be voted on in the House of Lords on Monday. They are far tougher and follow the evidence gathered from Scotland's stalking law. I urge the Government to accept them and provide support for victims now."
