Ivan Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow International Development Secretary, responding to reports that David Cameron has been asked to chair the UN Committee on post-2015 Millennium Development Goals, said:
“I welcome today’s reports that David Cameron is to Chair the UN Committee tasked with developing new post-2015 development goals.
"In Government Labour led the world on international development with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown bringing other international leaders to the table to write off debt and introduce the current MDG framework. It is therefore positive that the UK will continue to have the opportunity to provide global leadership.
"The test for David Cameron will be the clash between Tory values and the progressive leadership which is required to respond to the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
"Any new global development framework has to be rooted in social justice and human rights not charity. It must focus on long term sustainable change not quick fixes and have at its heart what Ed Miliband has described as responsible capitalism. Its credibility and integrity will depend on a new and equal partnership between developed, developing and middle income countries.”
