Huw Irranca-Davies MP, Labour’s Shadow Animal Welfare Minister, responding to today’s announcement of a new consultation on dangerous dogs, said:
"It has taken nearly two years for the Government to respond to the last consultation on dangerous dogs, and we are still not any wiser about when the proposed reforms will make it into law.
"The Government are making the right noises on a phased introduction of micro-chipping and extending the law to attacks on private property but the package is half-baked and does nothing on early intervention to tackle irresponsible ownership. There were 6,118 dog-related admissions to hospital in 2010 alone. We now need to see a clear timetable for reform with a comprehensive package to tackle dangerous dogs and irresponsible owners."
